Using Custom instruction to make ChatGPT remember your preferences
đź’ˇ ChatGPT Tips for the day
Based on popular demand from last week’s poll, we will explore using the Custom instructions feature from ChatGPT.
Unlike the other features we have discussed, this one is available for all ChatGPT users. To see the official post from OpenAI regarding this feature, please check it here: https://openai.com/blog/custom-instructions-for-chatgpt.
My understanding of this feature is to allow ChatGPT to always understand who you are and what type of responses you would like to get. With this feature, you can trim your prompt and keep that just focused on the things you would like to ask.
To use it, it is as simple as 1-2-3.
First, click the 3 dots near your profile image and name. You should see something like the following and click the Custom instructions.

Second, set the Custome instructions as suggested in the tips.

The top section is more about who you are. This is where you can set what you do, where are you located, etc.
The bottom section is more about your expectation from ChatGPT. You can specify what is the tone of the responses, how long you want this to be in general, etc.
Lastly, just ensure the instructions are enabled and what you have provided is saved to ensure it would start to impact your next prompt.
Now, you’re ready to go wild with Custom instructions đź¤
As for the example today, I was thinking why don’t we try the one from Mr. Altman and see how much difference we can get in the responses from using such Custom instructions.

I will try two different prompts and see how much influence we can see from the Custom instructions.
1: Explain what is superconductivity and recent development in this area of study
2: Write me a Facebook Ad that promote ChatGPT to university students
Here are the results 👇️

I must say the responses do align with the rule of “keeping answers to be short and concise”. Also, the above snapshots for the “Without Custom instructions” only show parts of the responses, so there is actually way more content there. I guess if you would like to keep the tone of the responses to be a specific way, the responses would be aligned with that rule as well.
So if you find yourself always asking ChatGPT to respond in a certain way, definitely give Custom instructions a try to save some time.
