🖌️ AI Art Tips Thursday #9: Control the "quality" of your art

Using the quality parameter to control the level of quality of your AI arts

💡 AI Art Tips for the Day

Setting the quality parameters allows you to specifically control the quality of your art generation.

By popular demand, we will explore the quality parameters within Midjourney this week.

As always, if you are after a detailed explanation of this and some examples of the quality parameter, you can check Midjourney’s documents. After reading the document, I realise that the quality parameter controls the time it takes to generate the art. Hence, you are only kind of determining the quality indirectly.

Now, let’s see some examples:

The art generation speed is much faster if the quality is less than 1. To be honest, at a glance, even with quality at 0.25, I think the image is still not too bad. I guess if you are only testing the concept, it might be okay to test with a lower quality so that you can test more without using a lot of your fast hours in midjourney.

In the midjourney document, it is also mentioned that starting from v4 onwards, users won’t be able to go with a quality parameter that is above 1. Well, I put that to the test as well. 👇️

Interestingly, no error message is shown if you go with a quality parameter above 1. But, as you can see, the quality of the art generated is the same.

Cool, so in conclusion, this is what I found by playing with the prompt weights:

  • A quality parameter below 1 allows you to generate art much faster and use fewer fast hours: this is gonna be great if you are just testing various concepts.

  • The quality parameter can only be less than 1 from v4 onwards: if you do see someone asking you to add --q 2 after your prompt to improve image quality, you can safely ignore that suggestion.

Try this in your next prompt

[Your prompt] --q {pick a number from 0.25 to 1}

🔤 Word of the day

Dry brush

n. a technique where you use a brush with very little paint on it. The goal is to create textured, rough, and scratchy strokes on the canvas.

To check further explanation about this technique, check this Wikipedia. Also, the following is an excellent example of how it could be used in AI art generation.

Prompt: a portrait of a woman painted with dry brush --v 5.1
