🖌️ AI Art Tips Thursday #8: Pick the right "weight"

Using prompt weights to determine what to show or hide

💡 AI Art Tips for the Day

Setting specific prompt weights allows you to apply more finer control of the elements that are shown on the image generated.

I hope you have enjoyed the last issue on midjourney v5.1. If you have some fantastic creations you would like to share with the rest of the newsletter readers, feel free to slide them into my Twitter DM @AnInquisitiveMd.

As mentioned in the last issue, we are going to explore the prompt weights within Midjourney this week.

As always, if you are after a detailed explanation of prompt weights and some examples about this from midjourney, you can check Midjourney’s documents.

To me, having prompt weights are like having toggles to set the importance of certain elements in your AI art generations. In Midjourney, you can set both positive and negative prompt weights to communicate such a level of importance.

First, let's just see the power of separating prompts:

It is interesting to see the different interpretations in the generated art just by simply separating them.

Now, let’s apply some positive weights to the house part:

Some key differences there:

  • By not stating the weight and just adding the separation, it has implied a value of 1

  • The application of different emphases is not related to the difference in the value of the weights. As you can the image for tree 10 and house 100 vs the image for tree 10 and house 10000 are pretty similar in terms of the distribution of elements.

Alright, if you want to get rid of some elements, rather than apply the weight on one element way higher than the others, you can also try negative weight or simply set so in the --no parameter:

One more thing, you have to ensure the sum of all weights value is positive:

Cool, so in conclusion, this is what I found by playing with the prompt weights:

  • Separating elements using :: tells midjourney those are different things.

  • Positive weights allow you to emphasise certain elements.

  • Negative weights reduce the chance of certain elements appearing.

  • The emphasis of elements is not determined by the absolute difference in the weight value.

  • The sum of all weights needs to be positive.

Try this in your next prompt

If you are looking to control the elements in your art creations, give prompt weights a try!

{element 1}::[-.5, 1, 2 or above] {element 2}::[-.5, 1, 2 or above]

🔤 Word of the day

Long exposure

n. is a photography technique that involves using a long-duration shutter speed to sharply capture the stationary elements of images while blurring, smearing, or obscuring the moving elements.

It might be a bit hard to understand by reading the above explanation from this Wikipedia but the following is a good example of how it could be used in AI art generation.

Prompt: Sydney street captured via long exposure --v 5

🖼️ Image of the day

I was playing with using Chinese phrases as prompts for the image and the result is a bit weird. I used the Chinese word “面”, which is supposed to mean noodle, but I got the following mesmerising artistic interpretation of a floating island. I must say the image is cool but the interpretation is weird.

Maybe midjourney can’t understand Chinese yet? 🤔 More to explore I guess.

Prompt: 面 --v 5.1
