🖌️ AI Art Tips Thursday #23: In-painting is finally here!
Midjourney finally released the long-waited in-painting this week.
đź’ˇ AI Art Tips for the Day
Given the new feature of in-painting in Midjourney, I would write about the popular choice from last week’s poll, i.e. using the repeat parameter, in the next issue.
Since the release of the out-painting capability in Midjourney, i.e. the zoom feature, there has been a lot of hope and expectation around the in-painting capability.
Finally, this capability has landed this week. Similar to the out-painting capability, we have a new unique name for this capability in Midjourney, which is called Vary (Region).
Now, I am going to show you how that works. The first thing you do is to get an upscaled image and you will see the Vary (Region) option shown. If you do not see that option, I have heard that you might want to restart your Discord application.

After you click Vary (Region), you will be directed to a different dialogue window where you can select the area for in-painting. You can either select a rectangle area or use the lasso tool. Personally, I find the rectangle selection is the way better option.

After the area is selected, you can then use the input area to clarify what you want the area to be filled with. I was thinking of replacing this person’s face with someone else, hence I have tried the following:

Here are the results:

This is really impressive! It replaced the face perfectly and took into consideration the style of the original image for the new face as well.
Other than changing people’s faces, you can also try to add another object to an image. Given we have got Elon here, let’s try to add a rocket to this image:

Well, I won’t say all the new objects added are rocket but I guess with some further tries you can certainly get something closer to what you have in mind.
In summary, this in-painting capability is a great way to preserve the majority of the image you like and make subtle changes in some specific areas. I am sure this would be a great addition to your AI art creation arsenal.
🖼️ Image of the day
I didn’t realise a typo would create such a different result in the end.
Originally I was thinking of going with this prompt: a close up of a man sitting on the bench of a bus stop in a raining day. However, I ended up having bust instead of bus in the prompt and the following is what I got instead 🤣

Prompt: a close up of a man sitting on the bench of a bust stop in a raining day --v 5.2
That is it for the day!
Until I see you next time, stay awesome my friend!
Cheers,
Minjie
