🖌️ AI Art Tips Thursday #16: What's new in Midjourney v5.2 - Part 2

Zoom zoom zoom? Creating variations with ease? Filling image in certain direction? More weird art generations?

💡 AI Art Tips for the Day

With the new Midjourney v5.2, there are a couple of intereting improvement and new prompt technique. In addition, they also released a couple more command since the release of v5.2. Check out part 2 for the changes I see in Midjourney so far.

Do people in Midjourney ever sleep? 🤯 Two more brand-new features have been announced since the release v5.2. Let’s take a deep on them as well.

For today, I will go through mainly the following:

  • Zoom outs

  • Vary your art generation

  • Panning the image

  • --weird parameter

First of all, for the zooming, varying and panning, all of them are done from the single art generation you have upscaled, i.e. what you can see below 👇

Zoom outs

There are a couple of default zoom-out ratios which basically keep the selected art generation in the centre and keep expanding in all directions by the chosen ratio.

This is also the basics I have used for the video I have created before. If you are keen about creating such a video, give me a shout!

Other than doing the default ratio, you can also use the custom zoom. Not only you can set the zoom ratio, but you can also make changes to the prompt so that new elements can be added during the zooming effect. I have tested the following by adding some additional prompts to the base prompt vs completing changing the base prompt to something else.

Looking at the above results, it does look like changing the prompt during the custom Zoom would work better. Feel free to experiment to find which works best for your case.

Vary your art generation

The varying function uses the selected image as a base and makes changes to it based on the level of varying strength you have selected.

The strong ones are certainly more different given they have different angles from our unicorn man. The subtle one is more consistent with the original image, so if you are wondering about consistent character creation, this subtle vary could work for your case.

Panning the image

Panning is not in the original announcement for v5.2, but it certainly has captured a lot of attention lately. It is like a zoom in my opinion just with the expansion in different directions you have selected. See below for what the results would look like.

Also, if you are done panning horizontally or vertically, you can continuously do so in the chosen line. For instance, once you have panned an image to the left, you can pan it again to the left or the right of your wish. Here is what I have done to pan an image to the left after the original image has been panned to the right. 👇️

--weird parameter

This new parameter is also not part of the midjourney v5.2 announcements but it has been discussed a lot since it was released. Let’s give it a go with a simple prompt to see what the results look like.

Personally, I am a big fan of this as the results varied a lot which I think is a great way to allow a user to explore the style as they wish in different directions. Although I do think this does look a bit similar to the changes with the stylise parameter, so I might do some future exploration between those two parameters.

Also, in theory, you can set the weird parameter to 3000, so let’s max the weirdness in the following test 👇️

Well, the results are pretty interesting as I think the weirdness level stopped at 2000. The marginally increased weirdness from 2000 to 3000 is way smaller between 1000 to 2000. If it is not because of the additional limb-looking thing on the 4th image, I would assume both images are the same.

Alright, so those are all the new stuff from midjourney and I hope you have learned heaps and have some new ideas you would like to try with such new features. I am also going to cover more advanced levels of using such features, such as using panning with a different prompt. If you would like to learn more about this type of stuff, definitely stay tuned!

This is why I like the weird parameter, I wonder how many tries I would need to do to get some with such a different colour palette. Love it!

That is it for the day!

Until I see you next time, stay awesome my friend!

Cheers,
Minjie
