9th issue: Announcement, announcement, announcement 📢

Google I/O, Plugins coming to ChatGPT Plus users and more

🌯 Wrap for the week

A close look at all the main headlines in AI

“AI…AI…AI…”, said in Google I/O

Well, from “no moat” to a slew of AI announcements, things truly move fast at Google. Let’s see what is going to happen next.

Just in case you haven’t watched the Google I/O keynotes yet, you can check the full thing here:

If you are busy and are not a big fan of the fold phone stuff (just gonna say it looks really cool), you can check the top 3 AI announcements I find interesting.

  • The future of AI + Search: the direction to add AI-generated answers in the search is coming.

I think it will be good for the users as it further shortens the time from asking to getting an answer to the question. I can sense Bing shaking now 😆

  • AI Test kitchen: for someone who is always keen to check what is the latest from AI, this is amazing.

So far, I can only see the MusicLM there where you can generate music using word prompts. I am still on the waitlist so I didn’t get to test it. But I hope more are going to go there to be further inspired to do more in the future. You should join the waitlist too.

  • “About this image”: detecting images created by AI is getting harder and harder and I don’t mind Google helping a bit on this. By looking at where the image is first, people can better understand if the image is AI-generated or not.

I personally believe that to get more people to use and trust AI, transparency is key. Hence I think this is a brilliant move.

Obviously, there are way more than the three AI-related announcements mentioned in Google I/O. For example, there are also tools that allow you to write refund request emails using prompts, edit images with some AI magic and create a spreadsheet template with just a simple description.

To check all the AI-related announcements, the coverage from Mashable would be a great starting point.

ChatGPT Plus users get more value from their monthly subscription

Do you remember the announcement of plugins from ChatGPT? That is finally coming to ChatGPT Plus users and I can finally try browsing!!! 😆

OpenAI has announced that over 70 third-party plugins, which provide features such as web browsing and access to third-party applications, are being rolled out to ChatGPT Plus.

Users can install multiple plugins but are limited to using three at a time. The plugins cover various industries and business sectors, including shopping, real estate, stocks, travel, and language learning.

While the plugins are still in beta and may have some limitations or bugs, they represent a significant enhancement to ChatGPT's functionality. OpenAI's move to allow generative AI systems like ChatGPT to access the internet marks a notable development in the field, with the full consequences of this capability yet to be seen.

I can’t wait to try booking restaurants with ChatGPT 🥘

Other top AI headlines announcements for the week

Since there are quite a few, I think it might be best to organise them by the company instead in this issue

Anthropic

I wish ChatGPT have this capacity as well so that we don’t have to craft specific prompts to ensure we can upload a large amount of text in one go. Just joined Calude’s waitlist today.

Amazon

I still remember when I have to think about all the scenarios regarding how a person would ask the Alexa app I was creating. This is a no-brainer and I am keen to see what the next iteration of Alexa could be.

IBM

Wow, the OG is joining the fresh AI race as well. The toolsets do sound more like for enterprise customers though.

Meta/Facebook

Meta comes got two big announcements in one week. Still progressing quite fast in the open-source area and their newly announced AI sandbox sounded quite interesting as well.

In this Friday’s episode (from 7:16 onwards), Brian from Techmeme Ride Home had some great coverage on the AI sandbox and his thought around personalised-Ad leading to personalised-content in general, i.e. no one movie viewed by two people would be the same, is fascinating. Curious to see what the chat around the water fountain would be like in the future 🤔

🎬️ Guess that movie

Adding a bit of fun to your weekend reading, let’s guess the famous movie from the 10-emoji description created by ChatGPT:

🦸‍♂️🦸‍♀️🌍👽🏙️🛡️🔨🏹💥

If it is a bit hard to figure out, you can find the answer with some explanation from ChatGPT at the end of this newsletter.

🧰 Toolbox

Check out this week’s tools and resources that give you more superpowers with prompt crafting!

1. 🔧 Prompflow
If you have used tools like Zapier and Make (formerly Integromat) before, this is like that for prompts. Basically, you can chain up the prompts and pass the responses from one to another to execute what you want. I guess it is also a bit like AutoGPT but with more micro-management.

2. 🔧 SciSpace
The hero message in this website said it all, it basically helps you condense your research time from hours into minutes. I like it has both the option to upload a PDF or just click a research paper to start exploring.

As an example, try this one on Attention is All You Need, which is the foundation piece about transformers.

3. 🔧 PDF.ai
If checking research papers are not your thing but you still want to chat with your PDF files to get some answers, this tool does just that.

The best summary of the Google I/O 2023 🤣

🎬️ Guess that movie - answer

The answer is "The Avengers" 🥳

Did you guess that right? Here is ChatGPT’s explanation:

This summary captures the main elements of the story: male and female superheroes (🦸‍♂️🦸‍♀️), protecting the Earth (🌍), alien threat (👽), a city under attack (🏙️), Captain America's shield (🛡️), Thor's hammer (🔨), the Tesseract or cosmic cube (⏳), Hawkeye's bow (🏹), and a major explosion or battle (💥).

That is it for the week!

Until I see you next time, stay awesome my friend!

Cheers,
Minjie
