8th issue: Is the future of AI open-source? 🔓

Leaked document from Google, concern from the godfather of AI and more

🌯 Wrap for the week

A close look at all the main headlines in AI

“We Have No Moat, And Neither Does OpenAI”

This is what has been included in a (claimed) leaked internal Google team. If you are not familiar with the word “Moat”, this reads as OpenAI and Google might soon face stiff competition from rapidly growing open-source projects in the AI space. If you want to check further about this document, check this issue from Semianalysis.

This leaked Google memo highlights that while GPT-4 and other proprietary models have enjoyed attention and revenue, their lead is dwindling as open-source projects advance quickly.

For example, Meta's leaked LLaMA foundation language model was improved by the community in a matter of weeks. The memo suggests that the once insurmountable computation problem is becoming less of a barrier to entry.

Cue the growing “Llama family” 🦙 .

GPT-4 is likened to Walmart, and as more specialized solutions emerge, customers question the need for such a generalized AI model. You might prefer to go to the small stands in the Sunday market that provide specific fruits you are looking for instead of going to Walmart.

Although inertia plays a role in businesses sticking with established companies like Google and OpenAI, the memo urges Google to become a leader in the open-source community, even if it means relinquishing some control.

While we are talking about this, it is interesting to point out the other progress that was made in the open-source AI world lately:

Should we be concerned about AI? The answer is Yes, by one of the “Godfathers of AI”.

Geoffrey Hinton, one of the three "Godfathers of AI" and a 2018 Turing Award winner, expressed regret over his life's work in AI and resigned from Google to speak freely about its risks.

Hinton's work led to the creation of ChatGPT and Google Bard. He was content with Google's handling of the technology until Microsoft launched OpenAI-infused Bing, which ignited fierce competition and increased concerns about fake imagery and text.

Hinton's specific fears about AI include:

  1. Spread of misinformation: Hinton is concerned that the proliferation of fake imagery and text generated by AI could make it difficult for people to discern what is true anymore.

  2. Elimination of jobs: He worries that AI advancements will lead to the loss of many rote jobs, significantly impacting employment opportunities for people.

  3. Surpassing human intelligence: Hinton fears that AI systems could become smarter than humans, potentially writing and running their own code, which could have unforeseen consequences for humanity.

Mr Hinton specifically mentioned that his decision to leave is not because he can criticize Google.

In addition, in the same Twitter thread, you can see Mr Hinton’s renewed view on when AI could outsmart humans.

We are truly living in a world with things moving quite fast.

Other top AI headlines for the week

If you have not tried Midjourney, here is a great chance to give it a try without opening your wallet.

Also, if you are not aware, Midjourney released v5.1 this week and the image below is a good example of how it looks. Check for more comparisons I did from the Thursday issue from this week: https://www.promptcraftsman.co/p/ai-art-tips-7

Another tool opens the gate for everyone. No more waitlist for Bing now, which means you can see how powerful GPT4 is without opening the wallet as well.

The demo from Bing’s team is pretty cool, I like that they have plugins also included there. I have been thinking to give that a go for a while.

Talking about how AI would impact the world. This time it is gonna hit your stock hard as well.

💕 Share the love and get some cool avatars!

I hope you have been enjoying the Prompt Craftsman newsletter so far. If you do, why not share your love of the newsletter with your friends as well? 😉 If you are sharing the love, I should do something in return to share my gratitude. That is why, I have decided that I will randomly select 3 subscribers each week who have got at least 3 of his/her friends to join the newsletter that week and provide them with 3 cool avatars.

For the lucky chosen subscribers, I will create these avatars using the portrait photo(s) you give me in 3 different styles of your nominations. You can suggest styles either using some image(s) you like and/or some descriptive text. If you have heard Lensa before, it is the same concept, but free of charge with the Prompt Craftsman! 😄

I won’t promise to get the same level of detail, but the result could be similar to the ones below.

Alright, if you are in, here is your link to share your love of the Prompt Craftsman with your friends. You are the best! ❤️
