Bankruptcy concern for OpenAI, Bing's marketshare and more

🌯 Wrap for the week
A close look at all the main headlines in AI
Top news for the week
OpenAI is burning cash daily, like a lot… 💸
Although the news actually took place last week, I have heard about it again across multiple places this week.
The bankruptcy concern is mainly raised from the following areas:
1. 🚫 Drop in Popularity: While OpenAI's ChatGPT saw a user decline in recent months, it's not just because of summer breaks or students' inactivity. The ChatGPT API lets users build their own bots, which might be the cause. Additionally, there's the rise of open-source LLM models, like Meta’s Llama 2, which seems to be swaying startups away from proprietary options. OpenAI may have overestimated its allure!
2. 💸 Financial Struggles: OpenAI's red numbers are growing! Their losses doubled in May to $540 million. Even though they have big plans for their revenue, backed by Microsoft's generous investment, those numbers seem optimistic at best. The cost of running ChatGPT? A whopping $700,000 per day. If they can't turn this around, bankruptcy might be on the horizon by 2024.
3. 🤖 Tech & Competition: GPU shortages are hitting OpenAI hard, affecting the quality of their AI outputs. With Elon Musk entering the arena and buying up resources, and OpenAI's recent attempt to trademark ‘GPT-5’ (despite a potential GPU shortage), the competition is heating up.
However, although there is this concern, OpenAI did publish some promising stuff on their blog:
OpenAI acquired an AI design studio, Global Illumination. Here is the blog post from OpenAI about it: https://openai.com/blog/openai-acquires-global-illumination.
Given the most recent creation from this studio is a game, there is some curiosity about whether this move is related to OpenAI’s expansion into the game. However, given the strong team in Global Illumination, this could also be acqui-hiring. Let’s see what new stuff would emerge from this.OpenAI published a good use case of using AI for content moderation. In the post, it has got some good arguments and examples of using AI for content moderation. The blog post can be found here: https://openai.com/blog/using-gpt-4-for-content-moderation
While OpenAI is moving carefully along these choppy waters, we're here munching popcorn and wishing them good luck!

Looks like Microsoft’s investment in AI so far did not help with gaining in the search market yet. According to the news, from two different data sources, its share in the market in July is almost the same as it was in January. Well, let’s see if any future investment in Bing would lead to a significant change in the search market composition.
