Sergey's return, new things from Stability.ai and more

🌯 Wrap for the week

A close look at all the main headlines in AI

Google’s cofounder is back, baby!

It seems Google's Sergey Brin, often viewed as the quieter of the Google duo, has made a grand re-entry onto the tech scene with his AI-focused shenanigans. And boy, are things getting interesting!

  1. Sergey's Tech Comeback: Google's co-founder, Sergey Brin, is reportedly ramping up his presence at the Google HQ. He's currently working with Google's AI team on Gemini, their latest attempt to outsmart all other AI models on the market, including our very own ChatGPT.

  2. Hiring Helm: Apart from spearheading Gemini's development, Mr Brin is also actively involved in talent acquisition. Following a significant loss of key researchers, Mr Brin is stepping in to choose crucial personnel to fill in the gaps. Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, far from being threatened by Brin's re-engagement, is reportedly welcoming it with open arms.

  3. Google Bard & Beyond: Initially playing catch-up in the AI race, Google launched Bard in response to ChatGPT's popularity, though it didn't quite match up to its competitor's capabilities initially. However, it seems the tortoise may eventually overtake the hare. Over time, Bard has gained ground, catching up to ChatGPT and Bing Chat with its latest addition being Google Lens integration.

The quiet co-founder has suddenly gone all in, folks. Better late than never, as they say! Let’s see what is going to happen next with Google then. I am keen to test out Gemini.

New announcements from Stability AI

The team at Stability AI has been working hard lately.

Just this week, we have got 2 new announcements:

New LLMs

Two new LLMs are being launched, FreeWilly1 and FreeWilly2. Both models are derivatives of Meta's LLaMA and LLaMA 2 open-source models, trained on a fresh, smaller dataset, including synthetic data.

The models stand out in complex reasoning and answering detailed questions related to specialized fields such as law and maths. Despite being trained on a dataset just 10% the size of the original Orca model, these models delivered exceptional performance, comparable to, or even better than ChatGPT on GPT-3.5 in certain cases, showing that synthetic data could be an effective solution against model collapse.

These two LLMs were released under a "non-commercial license" by CarperAI, a subsidiary of Stability AI, intended for research advancement and open AI community access.

SDXL 1.0

Stability AI has released Stable Diffusion XL (SDXL) 1.0, the latest version of its text-to-image algorithm that delivers higher-resolution graphics while using less processing power and fewer text prompts.

Besides generating images in any art style with photorealistic quality, the model is finely tuned for vivid and accurate colours, contrast, and lighting.

Users can access the model via Stability AI's API, GitHub page, and various products. Although there is some wait time, I find the easiest way to test the new model is via Stability AI’s own tool, i.e. this link: https://clipdrop.co/stable-diffusion

Here is an example of the art generation from SDXL 1.0:

Other top AI headlines for the week

What a great piece of news for the Andriod users out there looking to use ChatGPT smoothly on their phones! Unfortunately, not every country gets to access it now, check this link to see if your country is on the list: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.openai.chatgpt

So big companies that are creating the latest AI technology are also establishing the rule to watch over the development of AI in the US. Interesting 🤔

As stated in the title, this is truly bad timing since both the writers and actors are going through a strike at the moment. I am curious how many would submit the applications.
