Claude 2.0, X.ai and more

🌯 Wrap for the week

A close look at all the main headlines in AI

Move over ChatGPT, Claude 2 is here!

San Francisco-based AI company, Anthropic, founded by ex-Open AI employees, has introduced a new chatbot named Claude 2.

Set to rival ChatGPT, Claude 2 can summarise extensive text passages, up to the size of a novel. This AI operates under a set of guiding principles taken from significant documents such as the 1984 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Apple's terms of service, an approach Anthropic dubs "Constitutional AI".

Despite its potential, some drawbacks have surfaced, including Claude 2 providing incorrect information, referred to as "hallucinations".

To check the official launch announcement from Anthropic, here is the link: https://www.anthropic.com/index/claude-2. According to Anthropic, the key features of Claude 2 are the following:

  • Long input and outputs: if you want to dump a whole book to get an answer, you can do so with Claude 2.

  • Better coding ability: Claude 2 achieved a 71.2% up from 56.0% on the Codex HumanEval, a Python coding test. That is more than a 26% of improvement.

  • Improved safety in output: According to its red team’s evaluation, Claude 2 was 2x better at giving harmless responses compared to Claude 1.3.

Unfortunately, it is only available in the US and UK so I can’t really test how good this is. I am looking forward to giving it a go and comparing it with ChatGPT.

'Pro-humanity’ is the key theme of Musk’s new “baby”, x.AI

Elon Musk has announced the creation of xAI, a startup aimed at creating an artificial intelligence that is 'pro-humanity'.

  • Elon Musk's New Startup, xAI: Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has announced the launch of a new startup, xAI, with the goal of developing AI that is curious about humanity, rather than guided by predefined moral principles.

  • Beyond the Pause in AI Development: Despite previously supporting a pause in the development of large AI models, Musk now believes that such a pause is unrealistic. xAI is his response to this scenario, aiming to provide an alternative path.

  • Concerns About a 'Terminator Future': Musk expressed concerns about the rapid advancement of AI, referencing the Terminator films as a potential future if AI develops uncontrollably. He believes superintelligence could be as little as five to six years away, sooner than many expert predictions.

Other top AI headlines for the week

I think the last time when I heard of Watson was still around it winning the TV game show, Jeopardy! Given IBM’s focus on supporting business customers mainly, I am curious to hear what is the actual impact of Watsonx on businesses.

Other than making Bard more available, another interesting update from Bard is its ability to work with images. Based on my first try, I must say it is pretty good 👇️

Finally, some good news for OpenAI. I think this is a good collaboration opportunity, a little bit of give-and-take from both parties.

🎬️ Guess that movie

Adding a bit of fun to your weekend reading, let’s guess the famous movie from the 10-emoji description created by ChatGPT:

👨‍👦‍👦️‍♂️💪🏐🏢👯‍♀️🏆😂👏

If it is a bit hard to figure out, you can find the answer with some explanation from ChatGPT at the end of this newsletter.

🧰 Toolbox

Check out this week’s tools and resources that give you more superpowers with prompt crafting!

1. 🔧 AI Companion App
Well, you don’t see a VC sharing an AI app that usually. If you are keen to get an AI companion customised to your needs, this is actually quite a good starting point to consider.

2. 🔧 Stable Doodle
Thanks to Stability AI, we can now make the doodle into a good-looking image now. The black lines shown are the example doodle. Plus you can get 3D and pixel art as well. Why not give it a try?

3. 📚️ The risks of AI are real but manageable
Mr Gates has shared a couple of times about his perspective on AI now. Personally, I agree with his perspective. We can be optimistic about AI and manage the risks in the meantime.

I have seen a lot of those from animation-to-photos so far and I think this version of the Family Guy is actually quite good. Take a look 👀

The answer is "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story": 🥳
